In an unusual move, the Air Force Academy set Article 32 hearings, similar to a civilian grand jury hearing, for two competitive swimmers following an investigation into hazing practices by the team.
Lars Knutson and Michael Hannigan, both seniors, are accused of dereliction of duty and attempting to impede the investigation against them by influencing statements made by other cadets. The Gazette reported the swim team had a longstanding tradition of hazing, which included encouraging freshmen to overeat and then taking them to the woods and making them run until they vomited. Knutson faces a hearing on Sept. 28, while Hannigan's hearing will be Oct. 3.
