The Colorado Springs Independent disclosure notice:
The Indy’s longstanding policy is to always inform readers of potential conflicts of interest. As such, we’ve regularly placed disclosure notices inside our editorial copy to ensure full transparency.
In this spirit, we also seek to clarify the role of Indy founder and now semi-retired owner John Weiss.
Amidst his ongoing personal community outreach in many arenas, in 2016, Weiss took a posting on the board of Together for Colorado Springs (T4CS), a year-old civic advocacy organization whose stated goal is to make our city more tolerant, more sustainable, more just and more entrepreneurial.
Because of his T4CS civic engagement, John has completely recused himself from all involvement with the Independent’s political coverage and endorsements. Weiss is no longer directly involved with the day-to-day operations at the newspaper, as the Indy’s newsroom now directly reports to publisher Carrie Simison.
The Independent remains a part of the Colorado Publishing House, a wider umbrella media group owned by Weiss, which includes The Colorado Springs Business Journal, Pikes Peak Bulletin and local military publications, as well as The Transcript, which publishes legal notices and public record information inside El Paso County.
