24th annual Mountain Arts Festival

When: Aug. 1-2, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. 2009

Last spring, I took in the ever-disappointing Whitney Biennial in New York. (The featured American artists went big on mirrors and the "tacky aesthetic" that year.) This weekend, you can stay much closer to home and perhaps actually enjoy some of the 78 booths from artists around the country at the 24th annual Mountain Arts Festival at the Ute Pass Cultural Center (210 E. Midland Ave., Woodland Park, 686-7469). The free festival started Saturday and runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. It's not a Big Apple biennial, but certainly a less costly annual, so it's like more for less. — Edie Adelstein
