17th Annual Emma Crawford Coffin Race

When: Sat., Oct. 29, 12 p.m. 2011

There are events that help fill out a weekend, and events so unique that people circle the date on the calendar every year. Manitou Springs has its share of both, but none in the latter group that can top the Emma Crawford Coffin Races down Manitou Avenue. Today, for the 17th year, masses will see the noon parade starring 50 competing coffins, followed by the competition itself (roughly 1 to 3 p.m., free, manitousprings.org). The wide variety of "coffins" and their vehicles, not to mention the team members' fashions and the "Emma" impersonators, always entertain. And after the festivities, downtown watering holes will offer specials, while businesses join in the Emma Crawford Estate Sidewalk Sale. — Ralph Routon
