Republican forces behind an effort to recall Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, a Democrat, have obtained petitions to recall two Democratic state senators, Pete Lee of Colorado Springs and Brittany Pettersen of Lakewood, the Gazette reports.
The Pettersen petition, however, was withdrawn July 15 due to a wording problem and likely will be resubmitted, media reported.
The Lee recall has 60 days to gather 11,304 signatures in order to qualify for the November 2019 ballot.
Lee calls the recall attempt a “nefarious, brazen disrespectful technique to undo an election.” He suspects the GOP is going after him in an attempt to retake the Senate, which has a 19-16 majority. The House has a 41-24 majority of Democrats.
“It’s a transparent attempt to undo the election by coming through the back door with a recall,” Lee says, noting he captured more than 61 percent of the vote last November. None of the recall allegations involve illegal or unethical acts.
