Penrose Library 50th Anniversary Party, July 15, 12:30-4 p.m., Penrose Library, ppld.org.
ibraries never stopped being cool, but there’s no doubt that Pikes Peak Library District
has really stepped it up in recent years. They’ve extended their hand to the local DIY art and music scene, offering their Knights of Columbus Hall for performances, workshops and more; they’ve opened their doors to the homeless, running programs and giving staff extra training to help the community’s most vulnerable; and they’ve continued to provide the excellent educational programming and family activities that make libraries not just a place to learn, but a place to have fun. Now, help PPLD celebrate the 50th anniversary of their prominent downtown location, Penrose Library. Opened in 1968, this building has been a necessary fixture in our downtown core, and it deserves a heck of a birthday party. So come “as you were/would have been in 1968” and take “green screen time machine” photos in front of archival images and other ‘60s backgrounds to really get the vibe going. There will also be birthday cake, hot dogs from Big Papa’s Grill, button-making and live ‘60s music by local rockers The Psychedelegates.
