Many are called, but few are chosen. The many — in this case, a short list of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s 2018 finalists — were announced Thursday, and the nominations go to:

Bon Jovi
The Cars
Depeche Mode
Dire Straits
J. Geils Band
Judas Priest
Kate Bush
LL Cool J
Link Wray
The Meters
The Moody Blues
Nina Simone
Rage Against The Machine
Rufus featuring Chaka Khan
Sister Rosetta Tharpe
The Zombies

From a historical perspective, it's worth noting that Nina Simone has in the past been recognized for her unparalleled explorations of jazz, R&B, blues, soul, folk, gospel and classical music, but this may well be the first time she’s been accused of being a being rock ‘n’ roll artist. That said, the organization has been venturing outside its namesake genre for some time, perhaps out of fear that, with five inductions a year, they’ll soon run out of worthy rock acts.

The induction ceremony will take place in Cleveland on April 14, 2018.
