So disregard all of the parts below where you see the name Adam Gasper
. The defending bartender champion de-throned himself before the event could even begin. Here's how:
No longer being attached to the V Bar, he was told by an event organizer that he wouldn't be allowed to compete if he wasn't representing some restaurant or bar. According to that same organizer, he said he would represent Red Gravy
. But when they called to confirm that with the eatery, chef Eric Brenner
said "I don't know what you're talking about."
When I spoke with Brenner earlier today, he said Gasper had apparently come in and spoken to his front-house manager asking to represent Red Gravy a little while back, but the answer she gave him was a "no."
The organizer then felt that Gasper had "misrepresented himself," saying also he hadn't returned calls to answer a request to return the traveling trophy, which goes home with the winner each year to live at their establishment. Gasper has yet to reply to an email I sent him last Friday, and his voice mailbox is full, so I haven’t been able to leave a message there.
I next heard that Gasper has bounced to the Wobbly Olive
, so I called owner Sean Fitzgerald
Fitzgerald says they just agreed last night for Gasper to do some guest bartending shifts, possibly a couple nights a week. Wobbly Olive isn't signed up to participate in this year's Expo though, so Fitzgerald knew about none of this other hubbub. What we do know conclusively though, from the Expo organizer, is Gasper's competition spot has been given to Bri Julo
I also learned that, indeed, the Broadmoor has hosted the event for the last 20 years, but a schedule conflict partly lead to this year's decision to move to the World Arena. The new space will allow for a new layout, in which the chefs and bartender competitors will be on a central stage, around which vendors will circle — which should allow for better spectating of the action.
Also, Colorado Springs mayor John Suthers
has agreed to appear as one of the food judges, along with American Culinary Federation board members Nathan Dirnberger
and Sigi Krauss

We're down to five days before the 21st annual Food & Wine Expo
hosted by the Pikes Peak Chapter of the Colorado Restaurant Association
The event runs this Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. at the Broadmoor World Arena (moved from the hotel, where it's been held as long as we can remember).
will cost you $45 each to sample from more than 70 area outfits, all listed below. But trust us, you can easily consume your money's worth and make quite the meal out of the affair. And likely take a bite or sip from several spots you've never been.
Between tastings, check out a bartender competition as well as a chef competition. I'll be competing as the media helper with 2South's chef and defending champion Supansa Banker. And Adam Gasper, who recently left the V Bar
, will also appear to attempt to hang onto his title
