Recently beleaguered Ranch Foods Direct
frontman Mike Callicrate
sent the Indy
an unsolicited essay this morning titled: "America Returns to the Jungle: A safe and secure food supply is essential to a free society."
In it, Callicrate of course references Upton Sinclair's great work, as well as more recent food journalism like Wenonah Hauter's Foodopoly
. He takes readers on a tour through recent history that's lead to the demise of "thousands of independent meat packers and food processors" and the emergence of big bullies inside of a "corrupt food system."
He concludes with some suggestions for reform and a hint of optimism, rallying support for local producers versus the multinational guys. It's a good, informative read, worth 10 minutes of your time.

The word "slaughterhouse" could also now refer to the meat marketplace and the death of so many small businesses.
