Last week, I was reading late at night, as I often do, and suddenly
the lights went out.
All over the neighborhood. I was amazed at how pitch dark it was. I stumbled into the next room and found a flashlight. I called Colorado Springs Utilities
and found out the city-run operation was aware of the outage, which was to be restored by 4 a.m.
Here's what it looked like at my house last week.
Since I'd heard of other outages recently, I couldn't help but wonder: Isn't CSU having more outages than usual?
Well, the answer is YES.
at CSU reports the following:
January through June 2014: 358 outages
January through June 2015: 552 outages
Although that's 54 percent more outages, Sibert contends that, "We are still 99.9 percent reliable."
She blames the
rainy weather for the outages. "We have had more outages this year, mainly due to weather, so much rain and lightning," she says via email. "Our reliability is still very strong."
She also says CSU has had more water main breaks as well, some of them due to weather, "but also we have lots of old, rusty pipes."
