Though no formal change is expected during the year’s first quarter, Kirk Woundy has decided to step down as the Independent’s editor-in-chief.

Woundy has occupied the position since September 2012, and plans to continue doing so until a new editor is identified. He served as managing editor from 2006 to 2012, and has been part of the staff since 2005.

“I can’t thank Kirk enough for the years of extraordinary leadership and dedication to excellence he has provided as head of editorial at the Independent,” says Indy chief operating officer Carrie Simison. “He is someone who always strives for perfection and the mark he leaves on the Indy’s pages is one that will be difficult to match.

"We will be taking our time putting together search criteria to find his successor, the next editor of our growing organization, and will likely begin that search sometime in February.”

“This is absolutely one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made,” says Woundy, who is starting a personal history business, focused on documenting people’s life stories. “But I plan to remain a member of the Indy family, and am excited to see what the future holds both for me and for the paper.”
