I've enclosed proposed term limit reduction ballot language for the offices of El Paso County Sheriff and the 4th Judicial District Attorney that I've officially submitted today to the Board of County Commissioners in El Paso and Teller County. I've requested that the Boards schedule the appropriate public hearing(s) and potential votes with the first public hearing occurring on the first formal meeting in July or as soon as practical. This is all related to Sheriff Terry Maketa's alleged inappropriate relationships with staff, which we reported in 2010, and which continues today (see our latest installment , of what all of this means for the taxpayer).
I want to be clear that I have absolute confidence in the District Attorney and the current operations within his office. This proposed ballot question should not be interpreted as a sign of no confidence or concern with the DA or the functionality of his office. I've also discussed this matter with both our current District Attorney and with Bill Elder, the only candidate for Sheriff. I would encourage you to speak to them directly regarding their opinion and involvement in the proposed ballot questions. I've stated to them that my primary objective is to establish term limit consistency throughout all of the elected offices in El Paso County. In my opinion, term limit consistency is absolutely essential to our system of checks and balances.
