The Colorado Springs Police Department has received seven High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV), better known as Humvees. The Military style Humvees were acquired through the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) at no cost to the City of Colorado Springs.
DLA is the Department of Defense’s largest logistics combat support agency, providing worldwide logistics support in both peacetime and wartime to the military services as well as several civilian agencies and foreign countries. The acquired Humvees were dispositioned at Fort Carson, Colorado and made available to local, state and federal law enforcement agencies throughout the country, via the DLA program.
CSPD obtained the seven used Humvees in November of 2013 and properly outfitted them for civilian law enforcement purposes. One Humvee will be assigned to each of the CSPD Patrol Divisions (Sand Creek, Gold Hill, Falcon and Stetson Hills), with the fifth being assigned to the Specialized Enforcement Division. The two remaining Humvees will be kept for parts.
The Humvees, are a four wheel drive military style vehicle. The vehicles use independent suspensions and portal geared hubs to make for a full 16 inches of ground clearance. The Humvees will be used by CSPD personnel during severe inclement weather events, such as blizzards or heavy rain where flooding is occurring and to carry personnel and or equipment. The Humvees may be used during critical incidents such as; barricaded subjects, active shooter situations or hostage situations.
