Alley Arts Project getting started

Today, the Colorado Springs Business Journal reported that the long-dreamed-about Alley Arts Project, or some iteration of that, is finally going to happen.

Rob Larimer writes that thanks to a $200,000 grant from the City Parking Enterprise, the alley where Modbo and S.P.Q.R. sit (between Bijou Street and Platte Avenue) will be repaved with decorative concrete, unsightly building walls will be repainted, and the corridor will gain more lighting.

In addition, all the garbage will be shuttled to a single location, one of the many snags that has troubled plans in the past.

According to the article, though, the impetus for this grant came from the parking garage that abuts the alley. It's "historically underutilized," says Colorado Springs City Parking Administrator Greg Warnke. That's because people don't feel safe there, he says. It's dark and the homeless tend to linger there. Which makes it easy to fund alley improvements, since the grant money comes from a parking enterprise fund "which is earmarked for downtown renovation projects."

Work is expected to be completed by fall, and serve as a "beta project" to inform future downtown improvement projects.
