Mayor Steve Bach has named a city retiree as interim public works director, a position formerly held by Helen Migchelbrink, who resigned in May after one year on the job.
David Lethbridge will assume oversight of city engineering, streets, fleet management, traffic engineering and transit at an undisclosed salary.
Bach's chief of staff, Laura Neumann, said in a memo today to City Council, city staff and the "city executive team" that Lethbridge had been hired.
Last week, an extra item was added to today's and tomorrow's City Council agendas to confirm the appointment, as required by the City Charter. But now, he's being appointed to the "interim" post, which apparently doesn't require Council approval.
It gives me great pleasure to announce that Dave Lethbridge will be joining us as Interim Public Works Director for the City of Colorado Springs on July 1, 2013.
This is Dave’s second tenure with the City. He had previously worked from 1983-2009 in Engineering. He retired as Engineering Manager, a position with responsibilities similar to Public Works Director, after 26 years of service. Since then he has been working part-time for El Paso County as Recovery Coordinator for post-Waldo Canyon Fire flood mitigation and in the Regional Building floodplain office.
Dave’s other professional endeavors include working as a drainage engineer for El Paso County early in his career and later consulting with the City of Fountain Public Works and Planning department. He has earned both Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees from Nazarene Bible College, and studied civil engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell and UCCS.
Dave is originally from New Jersey, but has lived in Colorado Springs since 1973. He and his wife, Leslie, were high school sweethearts and are now the proud grandparents of six grandchildren. Dave enjoys woodcarving, home improvements, Lionel trains, and Leslie’s gourmet cooking and coffee roasting.
Please join me in warmly welcoming Dave back to our City team!
For more on the appointment, consult this week's print edition of the Independent, which comes out Wednesday.
