Art in the parks and under bridges: SCAMP returns

Each year, our town becomes more colorful thanks to Concrete Couch and the city of Colorado Springs spending the summer months outdoors painting murals, building art benches and laying mosaics along scenic pathways.

That’s because SCAMP, or the Summer Community Art & Mural Program is back. Starting now, and running every other week through Aug. 16, volunteers will converge on a pre-determined project and spend five days transforming it. This year’s schedule starts with a mosaic and mural at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, continues with an arts bench in Shooks Run Park and a mural in the Nevada Avenue parking garage and finishes with another art bench at the Midland Trail and 17th Street.

Last year, as we covered here, the SCAMP bunch painted murals under the Uintah Street and Shooks Run bridges rimming downtown. According to day-to-day SCAMP organizer Lisbet Rattenborg, each session saw between 20 and 40 people, and finished off the season with a free bike ride to survey all the hard work.

Also like 2012, anyone is welcome to join, though kids under 13 need an adult with them. You can pop by, though RSVPs are preferred (, 426-0731). Below is the 2013 SCAMP schedule, followed by images from last year, courtesy Concrete Couch.
