Panhandling, redistricting on city's Tuesday schedule

The city is off on Monday for Veterans Day, but the three-day weekend will be followed by a bustling Tuesday.

At 11 a.m. City Clerk Sarah Johnson will release the final maps for City Council redistricting. Johnson has already received citizen comment on the maps, which displeased many minority and neighborhood groups who said the new districts diced traditional community lines. Johnson has said she won't allow any group to influence her choices on where the lines are drawn.

Later in the day, City Council will hold both informal and formal meetings starting at 1 p.m. in City Council Chambers. Among the items Council will address is a panhandling ban in the downtown area. Council will consider passing that ordinance, which has been advocated by Mayor Steve Bach, on first reading.

City Clerk media briefing on final redistricting Tuesday, 11/13

City of Colorado Springs City Clerk Sarah Johnson will release the final City Council redistricting map on Tuesday, November 13 at 11 a.m. The media briefing will take place in the City Administration Building (30 S. Nevada Ave.) Suite 102.

The City of Colorado Springs City Charter and City Code require that the City Clerk redistrict City Council districts every four years. Redistricting is required to ensure that districts are contiguous and equal in population.

The City Clerk has followed the redistricting process pursuant to section 2-10(b) of the Charter and Sections 5.1.401, 5.1.402 and 5.1.403 of the City Code. City Code Sections 5.1.401, 5.1.402 and 5.1.403 succinctly outline the process for the City Clerk to follow. City Council passed these Code Sections in 2001 and created a process that deliberately does not include Council involvement in the redistricting.
