Colorado Springs Police have issued an update in the July 24 traffic crash that killed Officer Matt Tyner.

No charges will be filed in the death.

Read on:

On July 24, while conducting traffic enforcement near Austin Bluffs Parkway and Silver Drive, Officer Matt Tyner was involved in a fatal traffic crash that claimed his life.

Our Major Accident Unit responded to the scene to assume investigative responsibility along with representatives with the District Attorney’s Office as is protocol relating to fatal accidents.

Matt’s investigation was recently completed, and while it was thorough, it obviously could not include insight or key testimony from Matt. After reviewing the case, both the District Attorney’s Office and City Attorney’s Office agreed there was probable cause to issue summonses for traffic violations.

Our Victim Advocates then consulted with Matt’s family, who felt strongly that the other person involved in the crash had suffered enough and they did not want to cause him any additional pain or grief by putting him through a court proceeding.

After much thought and careful deliberation, and taking into account Matt’s family’s desire, the decision was made not to pursue formal charges.

In the hope of finding justice for Matt, the Department continues to search for the driver of the black motorcycle who was in the area of the time of the crash.
