Who's been on the water tour? The Gazette

Colorado Springs Utilities
  • Colorado Springs' water system.

In today's edition of the Gazette, reporter Daniel Chacon thinks it's big news to report that Colorado Springs Utilities spends about $25,000 on a water tour of several dozen people to the Western Slope, the chief source of water for Colorado Springs.

This two-day annual event for elected officials and community members has been going on for a long time, and has included media representatives several times, so it's not really a big revelation.

Anyhow, now Councilor Angela Dougan is quoted by Chacon as saying it's a waste of money and should stop. Dougan says City Council, sitting as the Utilities Board, should ask, "Is this something that is a benefit to our ratepayers or is it not?”

Apparently, the Gazette thought it would be of some benefit in years past, because the newspaper accepted invitations to send its reporters on the tour in 2003 and 2004, those being Ed Sealover and Bill McKeown, respectively.

Chacon himself has attended a Southern Delivery System tour, though that outing wasn't an overnighter but certainly involved some expense.
