Never has the generosity of Colorado Springs been more evident than in response to the Waldo Canyon Fire, and that fact became even more clear with the outcome of "A Community Rises" benefit concert Wednesday night at the Colorado Springs World Arena.
Organizers of the concert, which also was televised live on five local TV stations, announced Thursday night that the event had raised nearly $300,000 — with additional contributions putting the final total more in the $500,000 range.
Actual contributions at the concert from attendees as well as the World Arena and Colorado Springs Philharmonic totaled $85,407.90. The online giving through Pikes Peak United Way increased that total by more than $200,000 to a total of $288,807.00. Other grants, including $125,000 from El Pomar Foundation, should bring the final number to the half-million range.
The benefit was put together in less than a week, beginning with the combined efforts of the Philharmonic, World Arena, Colorado Springs Independent and Focus on the Family plus Pikes Peak United Way and other media.
