Local lenses: Films with Colorado ties

Our holiday film preview is out in today's Indy, which makes this a perfect time to spotlight a few other films with Colorado connections.

First, Colorado College put the word out today, surprising many of us, that CC alum Kaui Hart Hemmings (class of 1998) is the author of The Descendants, also reviewed in this week's Indy.

So, um ... cool. Congrats, Kaui.

Next up, the film Return will play at 9:30, Sunday, Nov. 20 on KBDI (Comcast channel 23), having already screened on Rocky Mountain PBS on Nov. 10.

Local ties include the film's director and producer, Cyd Chartier Cohn, living in Colorado Springs; Colorado College music professor Ofer Ben-Amots providing original music for the film; and the film's subject being the late Fred Sondermann, a former CC faculty member and Springs community leader.

A note on the film's premise from its press agency, MoxyBird Creative, where you can also view a trailer:

When Fred Sondermann escaped, along with his parents, from Nazi Germany in 1939, he never imagined what it might be like to go back there. Most of his friends and family, including his beloved grandmother, perished in the Holocaust. But when he was offered an opportunity to travel to Germany to lecture on American foreign policy in 1969, he said yes. This thirty two-minute documentary, adapted from Dr. Sondermann’s writings, explores the experience, the emotions and the conclusions of an American Jew returning to his German past.

Lastly, and least interestingly, a Colorado connection for those that enjoy indie teen comedies: The film 16-Love, starring Lindsay Shaw and Chandler Massey, will be released in Denver on Jan. 20, as its production company, Uptown 6 Productions is based there.

From a release:

16-LOVE tells the story of 16-year old Tennis Ace, Ally Mash (Shaw), who lives and breathes the game until a twisted ankle lands her with hot rookie, Farrell Gambles (Massey). She makes him a champion, and he shows her what true “Love” is.

If that moves you enough to care to contribute to the film's Kickstarter campaign, go here.
