Fran Zankowski, the chief executive officer and general manager of the Colorado Springs Independent since 2005, is the new president of the Association of Alternative Newsmedia.
Zankowski will lead the national organization for the next two years. He had been serving as AAN vice president since 2009, and was treasurer for three years prior to that.
His election took place Saturday at the end of AAN's 2011 convention in New Orleans. Earlier in the day, AAN members voted to change the name from Association of Alternative Newsweeklies to Newsmedia, better reflecting the evolution of the alternative media scene.
A native of Fayetteville, N.Y., Zankowski entered the world of alternative newsweeklies in 1987 as an advertising executive at the Independent Weekly in Durham, N.C.
Zankowski moved to the New Haven (Conn.) Advocate in 1992, then became publisher of the Hartford Advocate from 1994 to 2000. In 1999, he assumed the added duty of CEO for New Mass. Media, a group of publications in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York, continuing in that position until 2004.
