Protecting the elderly

I was raised by my grandmother, and in her last years I took care of her. She was as vulnerable as an old woman as I was as a young child. That people abuse the elderly is as vile to me as child abuse.

For that matter, any time advantage is taken of the vulnerable, it's enraging. But it happens. All the time. If it didn't, I've no idea what we'd report on. Kitties? Sunshine? Butterflies? Rainbows?

There are a number of events coming up this week and next at which you can show your support for those organizations, such as Silver Key Senior Services and the Coalition Against Abuse in Later Life, that are working to protect the elderly from physical and financial abuse.

I say, show your support.

About CALL: The Pikes Peak Coalition Against Abuse in Later Life (CALL) is a multi-agency collaboration founded in 2005. CALL's mission is to reduce abuse and neglect of people in later life in the Pikes Peak region through improved community understanding, coordination, and response. The Coalition meets regularly to address priorities within the following focus areas: 1) Education and Awareness; 2) Partnerships and Systems Improvement; and 3) Community Assessment. CALL has helped to improve the community's response to elder abuse situations through including: improving communication with community partners, developing an emergency placement program with Sunny Vista Skilled Nursing Facility, and training the majority of the law enforcement officers in the 4th Judicial District.
