The Colorado Springs Police Department would like to have some direct contact with you.
According to a Facebook message from Chief Richard Myers, the police have a tough gig that's made tougher by public misunderstanding. The chief says that the best way for the public to understand the challenges of working for a (understaffed/underfunded) police force is to interact with them directly through Facebook and Twitter.
Where do you get YOUR image and perception about the police? Is it forged from a TV show that probably has little in common with our reality? Does it come from a negative contact when you were speeding but didn’t like the fact that you were caught? Is it from a third-hand story by a friend or family member who either had a very positive or very negative encounter with an officer? Do you get all your news about police activity from the newspaper….the radio…the Web?
No matter where your perception and images of policing come from, they’re probably somewhat disconnected from the daily life of an officer.
One of the unanticipated benefits we’ve already seen with our expanded use of Social Media like Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, and our web site is that more and more people get their “news” this way. Folks who previously never got to hear the CSPD story are now connecting with us and seeing the complexity and pace of activity we engage in. The dialogue has increasingly been two-way, allowing us to hear from our customers even as we tell our story. And, we get to hear more from folks who take time to send a quick “atta boy” or “hang in there” in the midst of our almost chaotic existence some days.
