There's a word for that

Surveyor’s symbols and Second Amendment remedies may be the memes of the moment, but the American Dialect Society is taking the long view. The organization, which was founded back in 1889, began choosing Words of the Year in 1990.

Past winners include tweet (2009), truthiness (2005), metrosexual (2003), weapons of mass destruction or WMD (2002), and not! (1992).

And the Word of the Year for 2010 is:

App: Application program for a computer or phone operating system. As in "there’s an app for that," an advertising slogan for the iPhone.

Slightly more interesting are 2010’s lesser categories, which include Most Unnecessary (refudiate), Fan Words (gleek), and Election Terms (Aqua Buddha).
