Hazlehurst bids adieu to CSBJ

John Hazlehurst, former Council member and former Independent columnist/writer, is now a former Colorado Springs Business Journal columnist/writer.

Hazlehurst apparently "made the decision this morning to leave the Business Journal after nearly five years, and see what the future may hold."

"I'll miss my colleagues," he wrote on his Facebook page, "and I'll miss blogging/writing a weekly column ... so we'll see!"

Reached by phone, Hazlehurst tells us he'd been thinking about leaving for about a week. He says he was hired at the Journal by a different editor, Mike Boyd, but a new editor has since taken over, Allen Greenberg.

"Sometimes these adjustments are easy, and sometimes they're not easy," Hazlehurst says. "I didn't feel as comfortable as I did in the past."

He says he was "spoiled" by working for 14 years for three previous editors, Kathryn Eastburn and Cara DeGette at the Indy and for Boyd at the journal. "The three of them were great editors and somehow we worked in ways they made me do much better work than I was capable of doing.

"But things change," he adds. "There's a new editor, and I think he needs to bring in his own people."

Greenberg says this in an e-mail:

John tendered his resignation to me this morning, effective immediately. I told him I was disappointed and that his contributions would definitely be missed.

John brought terrific perspective to our news pages and through his blog on csbj.com. He had contacts across the city that regularly put him ahead of the competition.

His insights and intelligence made our newspaper more entertaining, more provocative and simply better.

Although Hazlehurst, who recently turned 70, has considered a City Council run, he said today he isn't sure yet about that.

John was columnist and writer for the Independent from 1997 to 2006. His column was called "Outsider."
