Yesterday, Sotheby's auction house sold John James Audubon's Birds of America book for just over $10 million, making it the most expensive book ever sold.

But what a book it is. This collection of 435 hand-colored illustrations is over three feet in height, and in remarkably good condition. According to an article in the Seattle Times, the book represents not only an artistic masterpiece, but a "major original contribution to the study of natural history in the New World."

It doesnt get more majestic than this.
