In case some of you haven't heard, times are hard these days and families are struggling to make ends meet. That gets even more difficult for many come winter, when there's suddenly a fat heating bill to pay sitting on top of the pile.
But actually, I come to you with good news: The county commissioners have approved paying $462,383.04 in federal funds to Goodwill Industries of Colorado Springs to provide services through the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) for the Department of Human Services (DHS). Translation: If you're poor and can't make that utilities bill some time between Nov. 1 through April 30, Goodwill may be able to help you.
According the the county: "In the 2007-2008 heating season 11,314 El Paso County households received help from the LEAP program. In the 2008-2009 heating season that number grew to 13,132 and in 2009-2010 15,999 households received LEAP funds in El Paso County."
LEAP won't pay your whole bill, but it may subsidize you if you qualify. For more information, or an application, call 1-866 HEAT-HELP (1-866-432-8435).
