Hiking for nature ed

Some folks enjoy singing in the shower, some the car, others, along the trail. Dave Van Manen, director of Mountain Park Environmental Center of Beulah, likes some Jackson Browne, Paul Simon and John Denver.

But Van Manen isn't just idly hollering tunes into the woods, he's hiking the Colorado Trail, a 483-mile path through the heart of the Colorado mountains that winds through the peaks from Denver to Durango. Van Manen's mission for this endeavor is to raise money for MPEC. His goal is to raise pledges to $100 dollars per mile, and donors can sign up for rates anywhere between a nickel per mile to $1 per mile.

Van Manen is completing the trail in segments (there are 28 in all), hiking only on personal time. The 54-year-old set out in May, and completed the most recent leg of the hike, sections 10-12, earlier this month. Now at the 200-mile mark, he plans to finish sometime next year.

So far, the pledges are growing. As of today, a little less than halfway through the trail, overall pledges are just shy of $48 per mile.
