Lost in the past week amid essential news regarding maple bacon ice cream, "emo hunks" on Pikes Peak and adult pool-peeing was one tidbit that makes us very proud at the Independent. In the annual awards ceremony at this year's Association of Alternative Newsweeklies convention, Indy music editor Bill Forman was announced as the first-place winner in the Music Blog category (for newspapers with circulation under 50,000).
Two things jump out to make this especially notable. First: Bill edged out finalists from more "musically developed" cities such as Portland, Ore., and Nashville, Tenn. Second: The award was given for music blogging in 2009, and since Indy Blog went live on Dec. 1, 2009, we had just one month of eligible work from which to pull.
Also placing at the Toronto convention was former Indy reporter Anthony Lane, who took third in the year's "wild card" category, health care reporting, for "Still screwed." As executive editor Ralph Routon put it in Between the Lines, Anthony's story covered much the same ground as the big New York Times exposé on problems in the Army's Warrior Transition Units — but the Indy version did so five months earlier.
Anyway, congrats to both Bill and Anthony.
That's all the self-promotion for now. Back to doing God's work.
