Garden of the Gods Gourmet adds wine tasting room

In addition to its recently created (and already sold out through June) Dinner with Our Chef in the Kitchen series — four courses with Amy Pontius at 7 every Thursday night — Garden of the Gods Gourmet just opened a new Two Rivers Winery tasting room inside its market space.

Sampling from Grand Junction no longer takes a five hour drive.

Owner Sandy Vanderstoep says she approached Marv Parliament at the Wines of Colorado for recommendations on Colorado vineyards he likes. From there, she called around and quickly made a connection with Bob and Billie Witham at Two Rivers out of Grand Junction.

"I thought that adding the ability to serve wine was a piece I needed in order to make things like our Dinner with Our Chef series work," she says. Hence the idea to open a remote tasting room for a local vineyard — each is allowed five remote tasting rooms by state law — in her market.

Garden of the Gods will offer the standard, free, one-ounce pours that most tasting rooms do, of seven six wine varietals. Customers can then buy by the glass to drink on-site, or by bottle to take home.

Vanderstoep says the market has been reconfigured to make room for the tasting counter. Guests can still sit to eat deli lunches, and in the evenings, GOG will roll wine barrels out into its parking lot and set them under umbrellas, creating a pleasant atmosphere for wine and food sampling.
