Tyler Tuesday: William Shatner and Lin Yu Chun share "Total Eclipse of the Heart"

If you caught our previous installment of Tyler Tuesday, you already know the drill. Yes, this is where we pay loving tribute to Bonnie Tyler, that most overblown of ‘80s power balladeers — which, given the puffed up nature of that heavily blow-dried and padded-shouldered decade, has got to be saying something.

Airing last Wednesday on Lopez Tonight, this historic super-schmaltz summit features William Shatner and Lin Yu Chun doing grave justice to — you prayed for it — Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”

Not surprisingly, the former Captain Kirk does his spaced-out post-beatnik best, although it’s not nearly as hilariously inspired as Shatner’s split-screen rendition of Elton John’s “Rocket Man,” which follows in the second clip. (If you watch just one William Shatner performance this year … )

Meanwhile, “Taiwan’s answer to Susan Boyle” is relatively low-key compared to the over-the-top melismatics of the Whitney Houston cover that made him a viral pop sensation.

Still, with material like this, can you really go wrong?
