Coffman offers new Piñon plan

U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman is apparently trying to free the Army's hand to expand the Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site in southeastern Colorado by introducing legislation that would bar any expansion by using eminent domain authority. (Read a story about it on the Chieftain's Web site.)

The logic is that taking eminent domain off the table would tone things down among local ranchers and property owners who have feared that heavy-handed expansion would destroy their communities and their lifestyle, allowing the Army to negotiate with anyone who is willing.

No word yet from other members of Colorado's congressional delegation about what they think of the idea.
