Louis Armstong: The metal years



Not everyone realizes that Louis Armstrong, prior to becoming a beloved American jazz giant, started out as a highly influential death-metal innovator.

Now, newly restored video from Oslo's Kulturhistorisk Museum shows the late “Satchmo” performing an early version of “What a Wonderful World” with his Norwegian band Crucible of Ennui.

Here’s footage from this long-forgotten phase of Armstrong's career, followed by a performance years later, by which time he'd adopted the more commercially palatable approach that would bring him international acclaim.
