Perfectly imperfect: Jeffrey Marshall is Supercool

We found out about this too late to do anything before last Thursday’s Denver show, but you have to watch this video of bassist/vocalist/harmonicist Jeffrey Marshall and Supercool — which they most definitely are.

For one thing, the group’s music is really, really good. And for another, Marshall was born with neither arms nor legs, so he learned to play the bass lying on his side and using his feet, which are located where most of us have hip bones.

“Obviously, I wasn’t into sports when I was a kid, so the next best thing to try and get women is to play music,’ says the Denver musician in a short documentary (second video below).

But watch the top video first, because the performance is extraordinary and the music is outstanding in its own right.

According to former Westword writer Marty Jones (who wrote a great feature on Marshall back in the mid-’90s, after the musician had appeared onstage with Blues Traveler), Marshall is leaving town for a while, so you’ll have to wait to catch him live. (Jones, by the way, has his own fine band, the Great Unknowns, featuring Drag the River guitarist Zach Boddicker.)

In the meantime, bookmark Marshall's MySpace page so you can be sure to catch his next hometown gig.
