Sheriff's candidate bags it

Todd Evans, a former El Paso County Sheriff’s Office lieutenant, has decided against running for sheriff, citing health reasons.

A news release says that Evans learned a week ago that "a medical issue that he has dealt with in the past may be on the horizon again."

"It will be weeks before Todd and his family know the severity and possible solutions," the release states. "Todd feels with so many unknowns, it would be unfair for his family and those that have supported him to be kept in state of uncertainty during this critical time frame leading up to the county assembly."

That leaves Monument Police Chief Jake Shirk as the only Republican challenger to Sheriff Terry Maketa, who recently reversed his earlier decision to withdraw, and who will seek a third term.
