Care and Share receives $100,000 grant

Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado will formally announce its reception of a large grant in the coming days.

Colorado Garden Show, Inc., a nonprofit that funds horticultural-related grants and scholarships for the greater Denver area and state, has given Care and Share $100,000 to establish new farmland and community gardens in eight southern Colorado counties.

Here's the tentative breakdown of how monies will be applied, from the Colorado Garden Show press release:

Care and Share points to a recent USDA Household Food Security report that shows only two other states with food insecurity growth higher than Colorado's between 2003 and 2005, as compared to 2000 through 2002.

The food bank says the grant was developed in direct response to Colorado's food support needs brought on by recent economic difficulties.
