Saving the Westside Community Center

With 77 days remaining until city funding of many Parks & Rec facilities is scheduled to dry up, City Councilor Sean Paige and department employees want to hear your ideas on saving community centers, in particular.

Paige and Co. are inviting people with an interest in keeping Westside Community Center (1628 W. Bijou St.) alive to the center at 6:30 tonight for a discussion. The hope is that everyone will "better understand the current situation and brainstorm ideas for partnership initiatives."

From the time of his appointment last fall, Paige has advocated finding ways to get private businesses and groups to help fund the operation of city pools and parks facilities, which are on life support due to budget constraints. Near the end of ’09, Council agreed to set a March 31 deadline for figuring most of this stuff out.

According to Indy reporter J. Adrian Stanley, there is encouraging activity re: pools and some facilities; community centers, though, are lagging behind.

Scheduled meetings at other community centers include:

Tuesday, Jan. 19
Hillside Community Center, 925 S. Institute St.

Wednesday, Jan. 20
Deerfield Hills Community Center, 4290 Deerfield Hills Road

Wednesday, Jan. 27
Meadows Park Community Center, 1943 South El Paso Ave.

They all start at 6:30, and they're all supposed to last only an hour, so it may be worth keeping any rants short and to-the-point.

To contact Paige outside a meeting environment, e-mail, or call 210-5741.
