Usually, when I get an email requesting "young women between 18 and 22 years old," I toss it in my spam box alongside pleas from dying Nigerian millionaires and the latest on penis enlargement science. And so, this morning, I nearly made the tragic mistake of trashing the call for entries for the 2010 El Paso County Fair Queen.
Whew! That was a close one!
Anyways. This year, some lucky young lady is going to be crowned queen of the fair. The rules are she has to be single and never married, and, as previously mentioned, between the ages of 18 and 22. Queen contestants will be judged on horsemanship, public speaking, a personal interview, and the contents of their application.
Applications can be obtained at the El Paso County Fairgrounds Office, located at 366 10th St. in Calhan, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday; or by visiting elpasocountyfair.com; or by calling 520-7880.
So what's involved in being the queen? According to the e-mail: "During her reign, the El Paso County Fair Queen will be a recognized representative of the county, at the Fair, and at many other events."
Sounds OK. Wonder if there's also a Fair King. Or a Fairy Princess.
