Adios to Atkins

The silent understanding has become a reality: Colorado Rockies third baseman Garrett Atkins has been non-tendered and is now a free agent.

The decision not to offer Atkins a new contract by today's deadline comes on the heels of failed attempts to trade the fading third baseman; most teams knew they needed only to out-wait the organization, then snatch the long-time Rockie on the open market.

The move bequeaths third base full-time to Ian Stewart, who last season batted just .228 but hit 25 home runs and had a .785 OPS.

In other news, four-year Sky Sox pitching coach Chuck Kniffin has left the organization to spend more time with his ailing father.
