The news almost slipped by without being noticed by local media, but Channel 5 reported late Wednesday night that Richard "Dick" Zickefoose, the Colorado Springs city manager from 1990-95 and a fixture in local government for nearly two decades, died Sunday at Pikes Peak Hospice.
Zickefoose, who was 74, moved to Colorado Springs in 1977 after working as personnel manager for the Iowa Department of Transportation. He served as this city's personnel manager from 1977-86. then as deputy city manager for the next four years, until becoming city manager during the heyday of longtime Mayor Robert Isaac.
Zickefoose had traveled extensively since his retirement in 1995, and his obituary indicates that he took his last motorcycle trip to his native Iowa as recently as September.
He had many friends and was respected inside and outside the local government. There will be a celebration of life on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 4 p.m. at the Pioneers Museum, 215 S. Tejon St.
