The Sound of Music is, in a word, iconic. Most people remember it for its heartwarming popular songs like “My Favorite Things” and “Do-Re-Mi,” not to mention the title track, but the story was more revolutionary even than the music. A governess raising a widower’s children through a formative period in history, the run-up to and eventual start of World War II, their growth and change mirroring and contrasting with that of the world around them. While the Julie Andrews film is and always will be a legendary adaptation, seeing The Sound of Music onstage with the right cast and crew can be its own magical experience. Thankfully, the American Theatre Guild has you covered. Committed to bringing Broadway to cities across the country, the Guild travels with high-value, professional and talent-stuffed productions, and this will be no different. They promise to bring the story of Maria and the von Trapp family to life at a time when we could all benefit from the show’s lessons. All that’s required of you is that you try not to sing along.
