Whose rights are righter?

The ban on smoking in bars generates scores of pro and con arguments. Nonsmokers tend to applaud the ban as a life-affirming move to protect the health of the nonsmoking public, while smokers denounce it as a Big Brother infringement on their rights. But lawmakers apparently think lungs and hearts need no protection in casinos and airports. For more on the ban, check out the news story on page 9.

Casinos - are environments that exist for one, and only one, - purpose: to make money. And money talks. Plus, casinos - tend to be located in locales far from cities. -  - Are you a smoker? No. -  - Has the ban influenced your patronage of bars or - restaurants? Yes, because now I can bring my baby - daughter into a restaurant or coffee shop without - exposing her to secondhand smoke. -  - How will this affect the bar and restaurant business? -  They'll provide some sort of outside patio or - balcony for smokers to do their thing. I don't see any big - impact.

    Has the ban influenced your patronage of bars or restaurants? Yes, because now I can bring my baby daughter into a restaurant or coffee shop without exposing her to secondhand smoke.

    How will this affect the bar and restaurant business? They'll provide some sort of outside patio or balcony for smokers to do their thing. I don't see any big impact.

No, but I did years ago, and I - was a real jerk about it and smoked whenever and - wherever I wanted. But as I got a little older and more - polite, I became more sensitive to both my own health - and the health of those around me. -  - Will the ban hurt business? All kinds of - disastrous consequences were predicted if a smoking - ban were passed in New York, but it was a bunch of - baloney. The bars and restaurants are as full as ever.

    Are you pro or con on the smoking ban? I'm for it. We can use any help we get to protect our health. People shouldn't have to breathe secondhand smoke.

    Why are casinos and airports exempt? Because they're able to exert political and economic pressure on the people who make the laws.

    Do you smoke? No, but I did years ago, and I was a real jerk about it and smoked whenever and wherever I wanted. But as I got a little older and more polite, I became more sensitive to both my own health and the health of those around me.

    Will the ban hurt business? All kinds of disastrous consequences were predicted if a smoking ban were passed in New York, but it was a bunch of baloney. The bars and restaurants are as full as ever.

    Why aren't casinos and airports included in the ban? Casinos pump a lot of money into our economy a lot more than bars and restaurants.

    Do you smoke? I smoke approximately three cigars a week. Totally recreational, I might add.

    Will the ban alter your behavior? Instead of going to a bar to enjoy a cigar and a drink, I'll be enjoying them at home on my deck.

    Will the ban hurt business? Not that I foresee. All bars and restaurants will be on an even playing field. There might be a slight reduction in business from people like me, but nothing appreciable.
