What's up with Iraq?

| April 15, 2004
The substance hit the fan big-time last week in Iraq, with resistance to the U.S. occupation increasing by the day. Back at the ranch, meanwhile, Condoleezza Rice underwent some ferocious questioning by the commission investigating 9/11. Locally, presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich was in Manitou Springs, urging the United States to bring the troops home now.
Sheri Bauers - - Briargate - - Accounting supervisor - - - - Is Iraq another Vietnam? I think so because we went in without having a good plan in place and we don't know what's going to happen. The Iraqis won't be ready to govern themselves by June. The turnover is only window dressing. - - Will what's happening now influence the November elections? We're not going to be out of there by November, and there's increasing chaos -- so yes. - - What's your take on Condi Rice's testimony? She's saying exactly what she's been told to say. Some of the questions asked her were pretty harsh, but she handled it pretty well. - - How should our troops be treated when they return? I think we learned a lesson in Vietnam when we didn't treat our returning soldiers very well. They're fighting and dying, separated from their families, and some are making the ultimate sacrifice, regardless of whether it's right for us to be there.

John Gudvangen - - Old North End - - Financial aid administrator at CC - - - - What should be done about Iraq? Iraq is more about projecting American superiority than about promoting democracy. The real issue is how we deal with the threat of terrorism. - - Is Iraq another Vietnam? Like with Vietnam, there's an increasing need to lie in order to sustain our policies. The public is wising up that the Bush administration has fabricated most of the reasons for being in Iraq. - - What's your take on Ms. Rice's testimony? She's required to be the biggest apologist for the Bush agenda, lack of attention and deception. That puts her in a tough spot. - - How can we honor returning troops? By giving American soldiers service that's worthy of doing.

Dennis Kucinich - - Cleveland - - Presidential candidate - - - - Is Iraq another Vietnam? It could be worse than Vietnam if we don't get out now. - - What should we do? Go to the U.N. with a new approach that gives up control of the oil, sweetheart Halliburton contracts and ambitions to privatize Iraq, and the ambition to write their constitution and determine who gets elected to office. We should rebuild all we destroyed, pay reparations for innocent civilian casualties, and help fund a U.N. peacekeeping mission. If we take a new direction, the world community will join in stabilizing Iraq and we'll be able to bring our troops home. - - What's your take on Condi Rice's testimony? People are trying to cover their backsides about who knew what before 9/11, while all the while people are dying in Iraq. Our focus should be on getting our troops home. That done, we'll have plenty of time to investigate 9/11.
