The Give! campaign

The Independent's Give! campaign champions nonprofits that do important work in the Pikes Peak region, while encouraging nontraditional donors — especially people in their 20s and 30s — to get involved.

For its fifth year in 2013, we and our partner, the Pikes Peak Community Foundation, set the bar high: a total donation goal of $1 million, to be spread among 59 organizations.

The campaign ran from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31, and brought rewards for different donation levels; community fundraisers ranging from video contests to paper-rock-scissors events; and "friendly competitions" among participating nonprofits.

In the end, the community more than answered the call. About 10,000 donations — more than 2,200 of which came from young people — combined with matching grants to bring in a total of $1,176,027. The biggest winner: The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, which accepted more than $63,000.

"Give! was started in 2009 with the motto 'Live here, give here,'" says Give! associate director Claire Swinford. "If the past five years have proven one thing, it's that philanthropy absolutely can be a community effort, whether we can give $10 or $10,000."

The campaign will return in November 2014. If you're interested in learning more about it, see indygive.com, where you'll find more campaign details, plus profiles of some of the region's finest nonprofits, and Give!-related news.
