Social Life in Western Mining Camps

When: Feb. 13-Sept. 2 2014

On Thursday, the Western Museum of Mining and Industry (225 North Gate Blvd., wmmi.org) unveiled its newest exhibit, Social Life in Western Mining Camps. The show dispels the notion of the lone prospector and sheds light on the women and children who lived in these makeshift towns, plus the auxiliary businesses that brought still more out west. Judging from what WMMI has shown already — kids sorting coal, miners hanging around a "wives wanted" sign — life was tough. So why should the mustachioed menfolk get all the press? Tickets run $4 to $8. — Edie Adelstein
