Bob Marley Birthday Bash,
featuring Basil Reid
Jose Muldoons 222 N. Tejon St.
Sunday, Feb. 6, 9 p.m.
Pull out your water pipes, it's time to celebrate Bob's birthday. The bash lights up at Jose Muldoon's, Sunday, Feb. 6, featuring local musician Basil Reid. Reid is well versed in the Marley canon, but expect to hear many soulful originals from his albums Prayers and Baby Birds.
To better appreciate Rasta culture I've harvested a few patois terms. No reggae lover should be without the following standards: Babylon, codeword for the police and any corrupt political system; bumboclot, king of derogatory invectives; irie, feeling good; and spliff, a large cone-shaped marijuana cigarette. A rude bwoy is a good friend but can also be a tough guy. A trustafarian (trust as in trust fund) is a dreadlocked, liberal arts college student who drives an SUV and is outspoken about living in harmony with nature. Cha! is an expression of great surprise. And the term zeen (pronounced "seen") means "do you understand?" Zeen?
