De La Soul has always been in the posse of thinking-man's hip-hop. Sure, they've had their silly moments, but after more than 15 years dealing out phat beats the trio needs to be given a little leeway. The legendary group will be performing at 32 Bleu on Tuesday, Nov. 9 in promotion for their new album, The Grind Date.
De La, individually known as Pos, Maseo and Dave (aka Trugoy), snapped boundaries in two when their 1989 debut album 3 Feet High and Rising surprised everyone with their creativity, thoughtfulness and levity. Knee-deep in a gangsta-rap world, De La was fun and weirdly hippy-dippy, and the band's then-DJ, Prince Paul, provided a new template for music sampling. The Grind Date maintains a steady toe in mainstream hip-hop but doesn't compromise on infectious beats, featuring several guests such as Common, Butta Verse, and even co-early '90s MC Flava Flav (who, bless his heart, still calls everyone "G"). While they're not still tripping on daisy chains, De La's still got it. Check out these living legends while you can.
