Steve Brite may be a mild-mannered advertising designer by day, but it's no secret he's been moonlighting as a masked superhero away from work.
A&W Root Beer selected Brite, who lives and works in Colorado Springs, and 10 other candidates this summer in a contest to win $200,000 toward a "getaway home." As a finalist, the company asked him to film a short video describing his dream moment in a new home: a croquet tournament with all his friends.
"You just can't lose with croquet," Brite said. In the video he dons a cape, tights and a mask and rounds up his homies for the "first annual A&W croquet tournament," followed by a root beer-themed parade float.
To win the house, he needs to collect the most votes for his "superhero" video featured on www.rootbeer.com. Folks can watch his video and cast their ballot every 24 hours to support his cause. Voting ends on Monday, Sept. 27 at midnight.
Raising the stakes, one of Brite's nine competitors lives in Castle Rock, 40 miles to the north. To gain advantage over the regional rival, Brite has sunk $1,200 into renting two billboards on I-25. If he should win the grand prize, Brite pledges to open an animal farm in Black Forest designed to provide therapy for mentally and physically challenged kids. Brite's wife Lisa, an occupational therapist, has dreamt of the farm for years.
"We had a five- to seven-year plan to start this farm," Brite says. "Why not make it five to seven weeks if we win."
Grand prize winners not only win a new house, they also win a lifetime supply of A&W and Brite plans to keep his croquet parties well stocked. "We'll probably have a bartender theme to figure out what to mix with root beer."
