Hero or villain?

Christopher Columbus is such a pivotal figure in Western mythology that historians designate anything prior to 1492 as the "pre-Columbian" era. Long hailed a historical hero, only in recent years has a more honest portrait of the discoverer emerged: Heavily armed for conquest, Columbus mass enslaved America's native people and is considered by Native Americans responsible for mass genocide. He shipped some 500 Indians back to Spain to be sold as slaves; 200 of them died en route. Yet we honor him every year by throwing parades -- the first in the nation was held in Pueblo to celebrate Italian heritage. This year, Columbus Day is Oct. 13.

Bryan Brunton - Downtown - Software engineer - - Was Columbus more a hero or a villain? He was both. The people he killed and enslaved make him a villain. The original act and his vision make him a hero. - - How do you view the yearly protests over the big Columbus Day parade in Denver? It would be a good thing if we incorporated recognition of the bad things he did into Columbus Day in a positive way. - - Should we replace parades in his honor with something else? Maybe we should rename Columbus Day into Discovery Day. - - Do you do anything special to celebrate Columbus Day? Not since I was 12 years old. - - Who actually discovered America? Leif Erikson? Maybe the people who migrated here over the Bering Strait. -

Anabella Crooks - Northeast - - Colorado Springs Utilities - - - Was Columbus more a hero or a villain? It depends on your perspective. Like most humans, he was somewhere in between. - - What's your view on the annual controversy over Columbus Day parades in Denver? There's been a lack of respect for Native Americans and how they're treated. The protests aren't specifically about Columbus. They're about a culture that was all but wiped out. They have reason to protest parades in his honor. - - Should we do something else on Oct. 13 besides having parades honoring Columbus? We should make it a day to listen to what Native Americans are talking about. - - Who really discovered America? You can't discover something that's already there. Columbus landed there and wrote about it, but it was already there and inhabited. -

How do you fix that? - - Should we cancel Columbus Day parades and do something else? He changed the course of Western history. If some people want to honor him for that reason, it really doesn't bother me. - - Who actually discovered America? DNA tests show it was the Asians who first came here over the Bering Straits. -
